Fast and Easy Keto Chaffles

This amazing recipe for keto cheddar waffles — aka Chaffles — seemingly went viral overnight! Everywhere you look in keto Facebook groups, you’ll see people raving about this chaffle recipe.

Why, you ask? So many reasons.

  • First of all, this traditional Chaffle recipe can be made with as few as two ingredients in as little as 5 minutes. It’s so fast and easy to make.
  • Second, it is a fantastic low-carb alternative to bread. It’s the perfect keto swap for making delicious sandwiches.
  • And third, it is super customizable. You can add all sorts of ingredients to change up the flavor of your chaffles. Think savory chaffles like Bacon Jalapeno, Everything Bagel, and even Pizza Chaffles.

But don’t stop there! You can even make sweet chaffles like Cinnamon Sugar “Churro” chaffles, Chocolate Chip chaffles, and Pumpkin Chaffles.

What is a Chaffle?

Okay, let’s take a step back and start at the beginning. What exactly is a chaffle, and how do you make one?

A keto chaffle is a waffle made from two basic ingredients: egg and shredded cheese. Yes, I really did just tell you to make a waffle with shredded cheese.

At first, I was skeptical, too. How could you really make a great-tasting waffle from egg and cheese? But shredded cheese is the perfect base for these chaffles because of its versatility. Cheese also gets nice and crispy when baked in a waffle maker.

Cheddar cheese is used in these “Original Chaffles” And mozzarella cheese, in particular, has a mild enough flavor to use in sweet chaffle recipes.

Does a Chaffle taste like Eggs?

One of the most common questions about chaffles is: Don’t they just taste like an egg and cheese omelet?

I’ll be real with you — some people think they taste too “eggy”. But for every person that doesn’t like them, dozens more rave about how much they LOVE chaffles.

The best way to get the tastiest chaffles is to flavor them to suit your tastes. Don’t be afraid to add a little salt and pepper, garlic powder, or herbs for savory chaffles.

Another tip is to use only egg whites to reduce the “eggy taste.”

And, if you want the best tasting sweet chaffles, start with a milder tasting cheese like mozzarella. You’ll have to try them out and see what you think for yourself!

Best Waffle Maker to make Keto Chaffles

The only piece of kitchen equipment you need to make these keto chaffles is a waffle maker. I’ve made chaffles successfully in a normal size Belgian waffle maker. And, I’ve made smaller size chaffles in a mini waffle maker. I like the smaller size better for chaffle sandwiches.

It seems like people are having the most success using this Dash Mini Waffle Iron. It is the perfect size to cook them quickly. And, the smaller size helps the chaffles crisp up just right.

How to Make Crispy Keto Chaffles

My number one tip for making crispier chaffles is to use a mini waffle maker like the Dash. I think that this mini waffle maker has the best volume to surface area ratio to give you the crispiest results.

Another tip is to make sure you cook the chaffles long enough. For me, it takes about 4 minutes for each chaffle to get golden brown. They might be a bit soft when you first remove them from the waffle maker, but they will crisp up more as they cool.

A third tip is to sprinkle a little extra cheese on top of the chaffle batter halfway through cooking. The cheese will melt and crisp up to make the chaffles extra crispy.

Freezing and Storing Chaffles

You can also freeze chaffles. One great way to meal prep is to make a big batch of chaffles and freeze them to eat later.

To freeze chaffles, freeze them on a baking sheet in a single layer (so they don’t stick together). Once they are frozen, place them in a freezer bag with a piece of parchment paper between each.

If you don’t have the freezer space to fit a whole baking sheet, you can freeze them in a freezer bag with a piece of parchment paper separating them.

To serve, you can reheat them in the microwave for 2-3 minutes. If you have more time, you can reheat in a 350F oven or air fryer for crispier results.

How to Serve Chaffles

Keto chaffles are so versatile. You can serve them in many different ways.

  • For breakfast, make a sausage and egg breakfast sandwich with two mini chaffles.
  • For lunch, make a BLT chaffle sandwich. Use a chaffle as a hot dog bun. Or, fill a cheesy chaffle with my favorite keto chicken salad.
  • At dinner, you can serve Garlic Parmesan chaffles on the side of Keto Meatballs and zoodles. Use chaffles as the crust for Keto Pizza. Or, use them as an amazing hamburger bun!

Variations on the Original Chaffle Recipe

You can add all sorts of flavorings to plain chaffle batter to create new types of chaffles.

  • Try experimenting with different kinds of cheese. Cheddar is the original flavor, but I also like to use Monterrey Jack, Colby, mozzarella cheese, etc. You could even combine two different kinds of cheese for added flavor — like a combination of mozzarella and Parmesan for an Italian flavored Chaffle
  • Add spices such as garlic powder, Italian seasoning, Everything But the Bagel seasoning, or assorted herbs.
  • Experiment with adding keto-friendly fruits and vegetables to your chaffle batter. Think small frozen blueberries, or finely chopped peppers and onions.
  • For even lighter chaffles, you can add a teaspoon of coconut flour or a tablespoon of almond flour to the egg mixture. For the ultimate fluffiest chaffles, add 1/4 tsp baking powder and a pinch of salt.
  • For sweet chaffles, you can add a tablespoon of keto-friendly sweeteners like Confectioner’s Swerve or Lakanto maple syrup. Don’t forget Lily’s chocolate chips!
