Oregairu And The Complexity Of Basic Characters (2023)

Introduction

On the surface Oregairu can be seen as just another romcom from the early 2010s that isn't very unique. People often point out Oregairu's side characters in an attempt to show just how basic it is but I disagree with that and this video is my explination as to why they're wrong. This is also just an excuse for me to finally make a video on Oregairu :)

I like oregaru, and because of that, it makes me sad to see people trying to say, oregaru is bad because its side characters are generic without delving deeper into the meaning behind these generic characters.

I won't say that the side characters, vodagairu aren't generic.

But what I will say is that this is done purposefully.

And this action makes the show all the more enjoyable people often forget, the main purpose of odegaru it's meant to show the development and growth of a socially distraught character.

It is meant to show hikigaya hachiman's growth.

Over the course of his last few years of high school and show how even someone who's, seemingly incapable of social interaction can work their way out of that position through the point of view of hachiman, although the anime does this somewhat differently, because it often shows us things from a third person perspective.

The light novel is set entirely through hachiman's perspective.

We get to know what he's thinking all of the time and how he feels about his situations.

Thus we also get to see all the characters around him through his own thoughts of them, which the anime carries over, despite the difference in their perspectives, it would make sense for someone like hachiman who sees everyone socially capable as fake to perceive those around him as generic cliches and see himself someone who goes against the flow of the social norm or well, someone who can't go with the flow as unique and different compared to them.

These characters are purposefully written as generic because they're seen from the point of view of hachiman and their designs are only there to amplify this perception.

Yukino is meant to be the generic cold tsundere with long.

Black hair yui is meant to be the annoying yet lovable people person.

And lastly, miura is supposed to be the girl you see in every show with all the makeup and hair and other beauty related things.

These characters are all perceived this way by hachiman and their character designs, strengthen this perception.

So it makes sense that the viewer would also think of them as just another set of generic side characters with no depth.

This point is flipped on its head, though when the characters start to be developed more and more as hachiman gets to know them, because it shows that although they have generic aspects that isn't their entire character.

This is primarily displayed in the two heroines of the show yu yuigahama and yukino yukinoshita, the two characters that hachiman interacts with the most.

But the characters that I mentioned earlier are also developed through their interactions with hachiman.

The viewer begins to perceive these characters differently because hachiman has begun the thinking of them differently.

The only reason that these characters are still considered generic is because they're not important to the story and thus hachiman doesn't interact with them enough for not only his, but also the audience's views to change regarding them yet characters like yukino and yui are seen as less generic by the end because they did get their time to interact with hachimon and have his views of them change the more that he knew about them and their lives like I said earlier, this applies to even those that he's only really interacted with a few times.

These few interactions with these side characters are what it took for his generic image of them to change at the beginning of the series miro was seen as a geyaru.

She was the complete opposite of hachiman having been the center of attention within her group of friends popular and someone who embraced being able to read the room, these things resulted in hachiman, having a strong disliking for her and seeing her as just another basic background character that was sort of related to one of the people he's close to most of the audience shared this kind of thought with him.

But that changed for some people, including hachiman himself later in the series when he ran into mira at a gas station during this interaction, mira's personality, didn't necessarily change, but hachiman was shown a different side of it a side that wasn't cold towards everyone.

But one that cared for her friends and didn't want to see them hurt while still wanting to let them find their own happiness in any way that they see fit this kind of thought process, isn't an uncommon, one in real life.

But it came as a surprise to hachimon in the audience because up until this point, we'd all thought of mira as just another one-sided background character, although it sounds narcissistic for hachiman to think about her this way from his perspective, she really is just some random person that he doesn't want to interact with.

So his perception of her is only that of a surface level.

One we the audience are compelled to view mira in the same way because we're experiencing the story through hachiman's perspective.

So his thoughts on her character strongly influence their portrayal in the story that's, why it started feeling like mira was more human.

And nicer after this interaction, though, this is more greatly shown in yuki, no nui, the two heroines of the story, because they get more screen time and development than any of the other characters yukino was the one whose character was more greatly developed over the course of the story.

But yui also had her fair share of development.

Similarly, to mira, both yukino and nui could be seen as generic side characters at the beginning of the story.

Yukino was the cold yet cool, black-haired.

Beauty and yui was the popular girl that would be seen accompanying someone like meera, which she does these two characters each developed in their own ways, but they both involved their interactions with hachiman or their interactions that hachiman witnessed.

Firstly, yui who hachiman saw as someone who could read the room and chose to go with the flow always complying with those around her turned out to be someone who cared about others and attempted to help everyone, although hachiman doesn't know how to do something like reading the room, nor does he ever want to learn to do something like that.

He doesn't discredit yui for the effort that she puts in to be able to achieve such a feat despite yui still being someone that follows the group.

Her character is developed through hachiman's view as one that cares for others, rather than one that complies with others.

This development came about, because of the amount of time that hachiman has witnessed yui and dealt with her wanting to help.

Everyone hachimon likes yui in her character, regardless of how different their worlds may be and regardless of how bad his first impressions of her were yukino on the other hand, more closely resembles hachiman in the sense that they both don't associate with societal norms.

But their differences are made apparent through their initial interactions and threw hachiman's thoughts on her at first hachiman has isolated himself from society and those around him, because he was pushed to that point.

He was bullied and cast out of anything social throughout his life.

So he ended up embracing that in an attempt to stop the hurting and make it seem as though he's chosen this path yukino being in a similar position as hachiman currently was and still is revered by those around her rather than isolated.

Instead she's chosen to isolate herself, because she sees no reason to associate with people because those people will only bring her down understanding this hachiman didn't like yukino for looking down on him.

And everyone else when he believes that she in actuality also simply couldn't make friends by conforming to societal standards like himself in the eyes of hachiman yukino went from the cold ice queen to someone who is misunderstood by those around her through her actions, yukino despite disliking those around her always kept her word, or at least put all of her effort into doing what she said she would being in the service club with her resulted in hachiman understanding her more and thinking more highly of her.

When all of these characters were first introduced, they seemed like the same characters.

You would find in a bad romance show in the early 2000s, rather than ones you'd find in a critically acclaimed show that's been loved since the early 2010s.

But as the story progresses, it seemed that all of these characters do actually have depth, although they still more or less conform to their generic role in the show they have their own personalities that the main character hachimon comes to understand about them.

The characters in oregaru may be seen as generic, even after having watched the entire show, but these generic characters were made to be this way intentionally while still having enough development to be considered unique.

But the story being said, through hachiman's perspective is only one of the reasons as to why the characters are made out to be generic other than being said through his perspective.

The story is about hachiman.

He is the main character and the other characters are only there to aid in his development, other than them being generic because they're being viewed through hachiman's perspective, they're generic to add emphasis to hachiman's unique character as well as the end goal of his development.

He is different from them.

But as the story develops, he slowly becomes more and more open to people developing his own group of friends that he relies on and who rely on him as the story progresses.

These characters, not only break out of their generically set stereotypes from the beginning.

But they also contribute to the development of hachiman, although hachiman is still fairly cynical and apathetic until the very end of the series.

There are moments where he starts acting like one of the people that he spites moments where he gives into society, wanting to be happy with other people.

These moments are meant to be the end point.

And the characters around hachiman are meant to represent this end goal, rather than be similar to him hachiman is meant to grow to be a normal person who enjoys the cliches of high school like those around him.

And the characters being generic are just one way to allow him to do that by the end of the series.

There are a lot of subtle things that oregaru uses to show hachiman developing one of the simplest yet most unique ways is his posture and appearance as the story progresses and hachiman develops more his posture and appearance also start to get better.

These small changes make it.

So that hachiman develops slowly in a way that isn't too noticeable until season 3, where it all comes together in season, 3 of oregaru, hachiman isn't seen to suddenly change into someone who cares about his social appearance, but it's more so highlighted now than ever when he's reminded of his previous remarks on society in high school, he cringes, because even he realizes that he's changed for the better.

The characters around him were there to influence him.

Because like I said earlier, they represented the type of high school life that he wanted to have he's still cynical.

But his ideologies aren't as radical as they previously were allowing him to enjoy the remainder of his high school.

Life oregaru has flaws as all media does.

But there are things being considered bad parts of the series when in actuality, they serve to better the experience of the viewer.

And I think more people should know about that instead and enjoy the show for everything it offers if you enjoyed the video, then please like and subscribe.

Thank you for watching you.
